Privacy

This notice explains what personal information makakatana.com collects, why, who handles it for us, how long we keep it, and how to use your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

When you send an enquiry

We collect what you type into our enquiry form: your name, email address, telephone number if you give it, country of residence, your arrival date and number of nights if you give them, the number of adults and children, each child’s age, the suite you prefer and your message. We use it to answer your enquiry and to quote for your stay. The fields marked optional are optional; without the others we cannot answer you through the form, but you can always call us or write to us instead. Your enquiry reaches our reservations team by email. We also email you to confirm we have it, with its reference. It also creates or updates a record in our mailing system, Brevo: your name, email address and country, a reference and a summary of your enquiry (dates, nights, adults, children and suite), whether you asked for our news, and how you reached our site, as described below. Your telephone number, your message and your children’s ages go to our reservations team only, and are not kept in our mailing system.

Our news, and the record of your enquiry

If you tick the box for our news, we add you to our mailing list and send you our news by email, and you can unsubscribe from any email we send. If you do not tick it, you join no mailing list and we never send you our news: we keep the record of your enquiry only to answer it and to count which of our adverts lead to enquiries. Sending an enquiry never changes a choice you have already made with us: to stop our news, use the unsubscribe link in any of our emails, or write to us.

How you reached us

When you arrive from an advert or a link, our site keeps in your own browser, not in a cookie, the page you landed on, the site you came from and, if you came from a Google advert, its click identifier. This happens whether or not you accept analytics; nothing leaves your browser unless you send an enquiry, and the record is deleted after 90 days. If you send an enquiry, these details go with it and are kept with its record, so that we can tell Google Ads when an advert led to an enquiry. For that we send Google the click identifier, the time of the enquiry and our reference for it, never your name or contact details.

Cookies and the choice we ask for

We ask before any analytics or advertising cookie is set, and nothing of the kind loads until you choose. If you choose Accept, we load Google Analytics and Google Ads, which set their own cookies to measure visits and the results of our adverts; if you choose Essential only, neither loads. If you have accepted and then send an enquiry, Google Ads records it as the result of an advert. Your choice is kept in your browser, not in a cookie, and you can change it at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page. Without JavaScript, none of this runs.

Keeping the site working

Vercel hosts the site and runs its enquiry form; like any web host, it processes the technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, to deliver pages and to protect the site from abuse.

Who handles your information for us

  • Brevo, which delivers our enquiry emails and keeps our mailing list.
  • Vercel, which hosts the site and the enquiry form.

Each of them handles your information on our behalf and for these purposes only. We do not sell your personal information or pass it to anyone for their own marketing. Some of these providers store or process information outside South Africa.

How long we keep it

If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address on our unsubscribed list, so that we never send you our news again. The record in your browser of how you reached us is deleted after 90 days, and your cookie choice stays in your browser until you change it or clear its storage.

Your rights

You may ask us whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it. You may ask us to correct or delete information that is wrong, out of date or no longer needed. You may object to our use of your information, and withdraw a consent you have given, at any time. You may complain to the Information Regulator South Africa, at inforegulator.org.za.

Children

Our site is for adults: a child’s age, if you give it, is used only to quote for your stay.

Changes to this notice

When we change this notice, we change the date at the top of the page.

Letters from the lake

Our newsletter form asks for your first name, last name and email address, and whether you work in the travel trade. We use them only to send you Letters from the lake, our news by email: on our list for the travel trade if you tick that box, and on our list for guests if you do not.

Pressing Subscribe adds you to our list straight away, and we email you to welcome you. Brevo, which keeps our mailing list, receives your email address, with your name and whether you work in the travel trade if it does not already hold them. The box for our news on our enquiry form and on our contact form works the same way.

If you have unsubscribed from our news before, none of our forms subscribes you again. Every letter we send carries a link to unsubscribe, and you can use it at any time.

When you write to us through our contact form

Our contact form asks for your title, name, email address, country of residence and telephone number, and whether you are a guest, a travel agent or other; how you would like us to reach you, your message and whether you have stayed with us before are yours to give or leave out. We use what you send to answer your message. It reaches our reservations team by email, which Brevo delivers for us. Unless you tick the box for our news, sending it adds you to no mailing list and creates no contact record in Brevo. If you tick it, we add you to our list for the travel trade if you told us you are a travel agent, and to our list for guests if not, as described above. If Brevo does not already hold your details, your name, your country of residence and whether you are a travel agent go with your email address.

When you ask for our trade rates

Our trade rates request asks for your company, country, name, email address and telephone number, and a message if you wish to add one. We use them to answer your request. It reaches our reservations team by email, which Brevo delivers for us. We also email you our rack rate sheet and how to book with us, straight away. It adds you to no mailing list and creates no contact record in Brevo.
