iSimangaliso Wetland Park · KwaZulu-Natal
Where the world can’t find you
The only privately owned lodge inside South Africa’s first World Heritage Site — eight suites in the dune forest, at the edge of Lake St Lucia.
A different safari
Every lodge has a view. Ours has a heartbeat — hippos below the deck, on Africa’s largest estuarine lake.
Safari, as mostly sold, is dust and diesel and the tally of five animals. iSimangaliso — “place of miracles and wonder” — plays by other rules: lake, wetland, dune forest, grassland and Indian Ocean beach inside one park, and one family’s lodge inside it all. The Morrisons have been on this land for four generations. The fig tree has been growing through the old crab house for close to a century. You are not visiting an idea of wild Africa. You are staying at somebody’s home in the middle of the real thing.
Stay
Eight suites off a raised boardwalk
Five Luxury, two Family, one Honeymoon — each alone in its own piece of dune forest, none more than a minute’s walk from the water.
The water
The boat leaves from our own jetty. The hippos are already there.
The signature Makakatana hour: a private boat on Lake St Lucia, hippo pods surfacing around the hull, crocodiles along the bank, a fish eagle overhead — and nobody else’s schedule anywhere in sight. Guests consistently call it the thing they remember most.

Days here
Five ecosystems. One unhurried rhythm.
Water in the morning, forest in the afternoon, ocean when you want it — no two days at Makakatana need to look alike.
The heart of a Makakatana stay
The Boat Safari
A private boat from our own jetty, out among the hippo pods of Africa’s largest estuarine lake — timed to the light, not a timetable.
The park from our side of the lake
Western Shores Game Drives
Open-vehicle drives through fig forest, grassland and pans — giraffe country, with elephant, rhino, buffalo and, after dark, an entirely different cast.
Two coastlines of one park
Beach & Bush Days
A full day that starts with game viewing and ends with your feet in the Indian Ocean at Cape Vidal — picnic packed by the kitchen.
In guests’ words
“Breathtaking" It was our honeymoon. My wife teared up walking into our room it was so beautiful. Staff were always there to assist you. Game drives were fulfilling. Would love to come back. Our only issue was that we did not have enough vacation to enjoy everything this Lodge has to offer.”
“The only privately owned concession within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, Makakatana offers an intimate and exclusive safari-style experience, and is the best base from which to explore Africa's largest and most fascinating estuarine system.”
“Staying at Makakatana Bay Lodge has been most refreshing- the staff are friendly and hospitable, and I got to indulge in some heavenly cuisine- the best any lodge can offer a visitor. The weather in KZN has been fantastic. I got to relax and enjoy the breath-taking scenery on the game drives and was so close to a leopard, rhinos and elephants”
