Weather and What to Pack

October - April (Summer):

Expect warm, sunny days with occasional afternoon showers that refresh the landscape. Mornings and evenings can be cooler, especially when heading out on a game drive or boat safari.

What to pack:

  • Light, breathable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, and summer dresses.
  • A light sweater or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Swimwear for relaxing at the lodge pool and the beach trip!

May - September (Winter):

These are cooler months with mild daytime temperatures and crisp mornings and evenings. This is the best time for wildlife viewing, as the dry season draws animals to water sources.

What to Pack:

  • Comfortable layers, such as t-shirts and long-sleeve tops for daytime.
  • A warm jacket or parka for early morning and evening activities.
  • Closed shoes to keep warm during game drives.

Best Time to Visit

Makakatana is a year-round destination, each season offering something unique.

  • Dry Season ( April - October): Excellent for wildlife viewing as the bush is less dense and animals gather for water.
  • Wet Season (November - March): Lush and vibrant landscapes, perfect for birding and witnessing newborn animals as many species give birth during this time.

What to Bring:

  • Clothing: Neutral-coloured cotton clothing for game drives and bush walks. Avoid bright whites and dark colours, as they can attract insects.
  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for outdoor activities, and sandals for relaxing at the lodge.
  • Accessories: A sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen to protect against the African sun.
  • Bug Protection: Mosquito repellent and lip balm (though we provide these, feel free to bring your preferred brand).
  • Swimwear: For cooling off in the pool or enjoying the nearby beaches.
  • Tech and Gear: A camera, binoculars, and spare batteries/memory cards for capturing unforgettable moments.
  • Essentials: Any prescription medication, an extra pair of glasses/contact lenses, and contact lens solution if needed
