Makakatana Bay Lodge is a short drive from either Durban or Richard’s Bay. After you’ve settled into your room, our experienced guides will take you on an afternoon game drive before enjoying a delicious dinner and an evening under the African stars.
You are greeted with a warm smile, welcome drink and a refreshing towel, as our porter takes your luggage to your room. Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and snacks before freshening up for your afternoon game drive.
The abundant giraffe are a mesmerising sight. Their poise, grace and curiosity makes for incredible photographs, particularly when they are spotted in groups of up to fourty.
They are often seen together with zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and water buck.
In our wet months, the water level rises in the wetland areas, bringing an abundance of flowers, bird life and plains animals who graze.
A visit to the wetlands is a sonic experience, as frogs and birds join in the symphony.
Returning from your afternoon game drive at 7pm, you will be escorted to dinner in the Boma or on the deck, to share stories with new friends on your safari experiences.
Our cruise along the narrows of Lake St. Lucia is a firm favourite, allowing our guests to experience the wildlife from a totally new perspective. Watch the resident hippo perform, set your binoculars on the reed birds, and enjoy the gentle breeze as you learn about the lake from our expert guides.
After a scrumptious breakfast, you will depart with your ranger and enjoy a game drive on the western shores, where you are sure to be surprised by nature’s beauty and its beasts.
Our skipper will collect you and your guide with a hippo welcoming party. After a brief introduction to the estuary, you will gently cruise along the narrows viewing birdlife, hippo, crocodile and other wildlife on the banks of the estuary.
After your cruise, your ranger will setup a picnic lunch under the shady trees before a leisurely game drive back to the lodge.
Dip your feet in the warm Indian Ocean at one of the most pristine coastlines in South Africa. Our beach safari includes a game drive from the western shores through to the eastern shores, allowing you to explore this amazing World Heritage Site. Where else could you spot a breaching whale, a pod of dolphins, rhino and buffalo on one trip?
After a scrumptious breakfast, you will depart with your ranger and enjoy a game drive along the western shores through the town of St. Lucia to the eastern shores.
A dip into the Indian Ocean along with a walk on the beach rejuvenates the soul. After some time in the sun, a picnic lunch awaits under the shady trees.
Your day is topped off with a game drive back to the lodge, where afternoon tea is served.
The early bird catches the worm. We depart at the crack of dawn, and head to the famous Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Big Five game reserve, 75 minutes away.
A hot coffee on arrival at the gates preceeds your journey into the park. A brunch is served mid-morning, over a ‘scottle braai’ a-la South African style. We continue our adventure through the park, seeking out the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo).
Return to the lodge for a light lunch around 2pm, and an afternoon siesta or lounge by the pool.
Enjoy a morning wetland game drive, relax at the lodge pool for the day listening to birds and waiting for the elements of nature to present themselves to you.
End the day with a spectacular night drive looking at the stars and searching for the leopard, hyena, porcupine and other nocturnal animals.
